MEET OUR FABRICS!

and why we choose them

As a clothing brand we dream of a circular apparel industry, one where all the clothes we buy live long, well worn lives and eventually become upcycled, recycled, or completely decomposed. With this vision in mind, we are constantly working to minimize our environmental impact and eliminate waste from our own business. The fabrics we choose for our textiles are carefully selected with end of life biodegradability in mind. This is why we’ve opted to use cotton for the majority of our styles. It’s a natural fiber that can decompose relatively easily. We utilize a small amount of lycra to help shape the garment (but as little as possible because that content is much more difficult to breakdown). We’ve recently added even more sustainable fabric options to our line; our 100% linen requires significantly less resources to produce and can decompose in as little as two weeks, and our GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) cotton contains a whole host of extra benefits for the wearer and the Earth. We are excited to continue pushing Nooworks sustainability and expanding our offerings of more sustainable fabrics. This year we are adding a new fabric that is hemp based, and hope to eventually replace all of our cotton styles with it as it is significantly less resource intensive to produce.

As we continue to work toward our vision of sustainability for our brand, we invite you to  take part in our dream of creating a circular clothing industry. The great news here is there are really simple and even fun ways you can participate in closing the apparel loop! Simply prolonging the life of your Nooworks pieces by hand washing and air drying them will help maintain your garments integrity for so much longer. When you’re ready to move on from your clothes, consider gifting to a friend, donating to a charity, or reselling it through our Full Circle resell platform. If your garment gets damaged, don’t toss it! Instead, try mending it (we sell nifty mending scrap packs for all your DIY and repair needs!). These are just a few ways we can work together to help eliminate textile waste and be kinder to our planet. So you can look good in Nooworks and feel good about it too!

  • Twill: 97%Cotton / 3%Lycra

Our 8 oz stretch twill is our heavier weight fabric, but still has a soft hand-feel and a small amount of stretch for an all around comfortable fit. Our solid colored twill is a brushed twill which adds softness, and our printed twill is wet printed. We use it to make most of our pant styles and jumpsuit options like the Carpenter Overalls and some of our Coveralls. Care Instructions: To help preserve the print and fit of your garment, only wash when it truly needs it. Then, turn it inside out and hand wash with cold water and a gentle detergent. Line dry. By the way, our twill is preshrunk, but a teensy bit of shrinkage might occur after wash, especially if care instructions are not followed.
  • Poplin: 97%Cotton / 3%Lycra

Our 3.6 oz cotton poplin is lightweight and breathable, and it has a small amount of stretch for a comfortable fit. We make many of our dresses and some of our Coveralls out of our poplin. Care Instructions: To help preserve the print and fit of your garment, only wash when it truly needs it. Then, turn it inside out and hand wash with cold water and a gentle detergent. Line dry. Our poplin is preshrunk, but a teensy bit of shrinkage might occur after wash, especially if care instructions are not followed.
  • Jersey: 95%Cotton / 5%Lycra

Our 10 oz stretch jersey is incredibly soft and stretchy. It’s lightweight but thick enough to provide full coverage. It can stretch up to 8 inches, so there’s a bit more sizing flexibility with our jersey styles. We use jersey for many of our dresses (look for Dahlia, Vacation), tops (crop, puff), and jumpsuits (magic suit, Sonny suit). Care Instructions: To help preserve the print and fit of your garment, only wash when it truly needs it. Then, turn it inside out and hand wash with cold water and a gentle detergent. Line dry. Our jersey is also preshrunk, but a teensy bit of shrinkage might occur after wash, especially if care instructions are not followed.
  • Rayon: 100% Rayon

Our 4 oz rayon is our lightest weight fabric. It’s incredibly soft, breathable, and airy. It’s perfect for styles that drape and flow, like our Naomi dress and the Joyce button down shirt. Care Instructions: Due to the lightweight quality of this textile, we advise your Rayon garment be dry cleaned only. We highly suggest looking for a green dry cleaning facility, or one that avoids PERC and other toxic chemicals.
  • Linen: 100% Linen

Our 5 oz linen is super breathable, durable, and absorbent (perfect for those hot humid summer days!). Our linen is wet printed, which gives it a softer hand feel, and it does soften with wear and wash. Other reasons to love it- it’s luxurious, 100% biodegradable, moth resistant, and built to last! Currently you can find the Naomi, Catalina pants, and Garden suit in linen, but we’re really excited to expand our offerings in this sustainable textile option! Care Instructions: To help preserve the print and fit of your linen garment, only wash when it truly needs it. Then, turn it inside out and hand wash with cold water and a gentle detergent. Line dry (think of how chic your linen pieces will look hang drying in the sun!)
  • GOTS Certified Cotton: 100% Organic Cotton

Our Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified cotton is a heavy weight 10 oz twill. It is a thicker and stiffer material than our printed twill, but it softens dramatically with wash and wear. We love GOTS certified cottons because they meet strict requirements for organic textiles. The cotton is grown without pesticides and then processed without toxic chemicals that are harmful to the environment and human health. GOTS cottons are also colored with safe, low-impact dyes, and free of all finishing chemicals like formaldehyde, and they’re 100% biodegradable. So you can wear it and say YAY for the Earth! Our GOTS certified cotton only comes in solid colors. We make some of our Art Teachers, Coveralls, and Twill Mini Skirt and Moto Jacket set out of it. Care Instructions: To help preserve the print and fit of your garment, only wash when it truly needs it. Then, turn it inside out and hand wash with cold water and a gentle detergent. Line dry.
  • SWIM:100% Recycled Tricot

Our 100% recycled tricot is the only entirely synthetic fabric we use and is used specifically for our swimwear line. It’s super lightweight, stretchy, and dries quickly, so it’s perfect for our bathing suits. To help prevent the release of nasty micro plastics into our waterways, we suggest hand washing and hang drying your swimwear. And hey, bathing suits dry so fast!

About Our Printing Process

The vast majority of our fabric is un-dyed, which helps us avoid the harmful effects of the textile dyeing industry on the environment and human health. We produce our brightly colored textiles using a wet printing method called rotary printing. Each color in a design is engraved into a massive metal plate and the fabric is rolled through as many plate as there are colors to get the final design. It's kind of like stamping, but in a tube. All of our fabrics are printed in a facility in sunny Los Angeles with very nice people who we have worked with since 2014.

DOING YOUR PART

the best way to make clothes last

The best way to make your clothes last is by washing them less often, only when it’s really needed. Spot cleaning is a lost art. When it is time for a wash, skip the washer and dryer cycle and opt for hand washing and hang drying. Your clothes will thank you; the fibers will remain intact longer and the colors won’t fade as fast. Added bonus, it’ll save water, energy, and help to keep yucky micro plastics out of our eco system. Here are some other ways you can add a little sustainability to your laundry routine:

  • When you use your washer keep your wash cycle set to “cold” to prolong the life of your clothes and help reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Choose a plastic-free, biodegradable detergent that doesn’t contain harsh chemicals that pollute water sources. It’ll also help keep harmful dyes, phosphates, chlorine, and phthalates out of your body and the environment.
  • If you need to dry clean, look for a green dry cleaning option (specifically a dry cleaner that avoids PERC and other highly toxic chemicals).
  • When a loved clothing item gets a rip or a snag, don’t throw it away! Instead mend, patch, darn, or get down with some fun DIY projects! Side note: We sell mending scraps for all of your Nooworks repair needs!
